Bernie: The Petfinder!
I have two parakeets in my living room. They're my son's parakeets, actually. The cage door is propped open, and the parakeets fly around the living room and then return to the cage.
Tonight one of the parakeets was missing. At first I thought he was just somewhere unseen. But after I looked and looked but couldn't find him, I began to fear that he had gotten out. I had had the front door cracked open a few inches so that my dog Bernie could go out. I feared that the parakeet had gone through that small opening and had gotten out.
After several hours, with the parakeet not returning to his cage, I pretty much accepted that he was gone.
Some time later I was sitting on the edge of my bed, and Bernie was laying on the floor. Bernie has in the past helped me find pets. Still, I didn't think for a moment that he knew where the bird was. But, just for the heck of it, I said to him, "Do you know where the birdie is?" Immediately he looked up and stared at the window. And there, between the window pane and the screen, resting on the lower edge of the window frame, was the bird!
Bernie's a real good pet finder. I remember years ago when I had a pet rat (yes, a rat -- they make wonderful pets!) named Timmy, I would let Timmy and Bernie play together in the living room. Once, after they had been playing for a while, I couldn't find Timmy. So I said to Bernie, "Where's Timmy?" He immediately went to the couch and stuck his nose under it. And there was Timmy, sitting under the couch!
And, more recently, the person in the apartment next to mine would let her two dogs out in front of the apartment, and Bernie would go out and play with them. Usually the dogs would stay in the front of the apartment. But this time, when she went to look for them, her dogs were nowhere to be found.
Bernie was still out front, sniffing around. So I went up to Bernie and said, "Where are Caesar and Columbia?" He immediately led me to the building next to ours, went to the other side of the building, and, lo and behold, there were my neighbor's two dogs!
So, Bernie's a cool dog. He's kinda like a bloodhound, only for small pets. :-)
